I am a tutor of 4 years. My lessons start with asking the student what they learnt in school for the week. Thereafter, I will rely on textbook / assessment book questions to test students understanding. I observe how a student approaches questions as it is important to understand their methodology. Where possible, I also share different ways to solve questions using the content they have learnt in school so that they can still secure the marks for their exams. I encourage students to make mistakes during tuition. Even if they do not know how to solve a question, I encourage them to attempt the question instead of leaving it blank. In my experience, students are unable to solve questions because they usually do not understand what the question means. My lessons are designed to explain the meaning of the questions to students in simple terms and build their confidence.
